 The concept for a 5K fundraiser was established to meet the continuing growth and needs of our community. Since 2001, the Aledo Children’s AdvoCats have raised money, primarily through a fall golf tournament, to fulfill the unmet needs of children and families in our community. However, as our community grew, so did the number of families in need.The AdvoCats needed a second fundraiser. The fall golf tournament was a huge success, selling out yearly, but we wanted to develop a fun, family event for our community to enjoy. Thus, Run, Walk or Crawl for our kids was born. The response from the community was amazing. Aledo Independent School District donated the use of Bearcat Stadium and facilities. Andy Lucas, owner of Lukes’ Locker in Fort Worth and a local resident, provided professional 5K production services. Aledo students, k-6th grade, participated in a contest to develop the race logo. Local law enforcement and many other entities volunteered to help. We routed the course through Aledo’s business district and developed a Business Spirit Award for the more than 60 businesses along the route to promote not only a fun, festive atmosphere but also support our local commerce. Following the race we provided free festivities for the whole family. Nearly 400 runners and dozens of businesses and community organizations participated in our first race. The event raised more than $25,000 all of which went directly back into the community. Please help support our 2nd annual family event so we can continue to help children and families in need. |
